Obie’s “Fillin” Station

Obie’s “Fillin” Station

Gwen: Born in Elcampo, Texas Gwen moved to Alvin when she was three. Her dad worked in a chemical plant, and her mom was a hair dresser. They were never poor, but they sure weren’t rich neither. She graduated Alvin High School in 1981 and attended Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena, Texas. While growing up she loved animals and showed just about every animal available for showing in all the major shows around Texas. She won grand champion with a pig at the county fair. She was the president of the FFA for two years and was very active in the Catholic Church and still is. She graduated from TCC in ’85 started her own chiropractic clinic in ’86. She ran a successful practice and sold it in 2006 to another chiropractor. She was the president of the Kiwanis in Alvin for one year and treasurer for many years to include being the organizer and operating chairman for the annual Kiwanis Crawfest, a very large annual event that brought in significant amounts of money for charity. She has won numerous awards from the Alvin Chamber of Commerce to include business woman of the year. She is full blooded Czech. Her dad had 11 brothers and sisters, most of them still reside in or around Elcampo. With a family of that size BBQing was something that she grew up with. It was just natural that she would be cooking bbq for many happy patrons at a popular restaurant somewhere. That dream became a reality with the opening of Obie’s Fillin Station!

Greg: Born on a small Farm in PA, his family lived on that land for seven generations. Greg was the first Obert to ever go to College, ever! He worked on the farm all his life and had part time jobs too. One day when they were picking up hay in the field (Greg was about 8) an airplane flew over them real low, he looked up in the sky and said to his grandpa, “I am going to be a pilot someday.” He said good for you boy! Greg graduated from Corry Area High School Magna Dumb Loudly, got accepted into Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach Florida in 1981, entered a program called Aeronautical Studies with a concentration in Air Transportation Management. A “buddy” talked him into going into Army ROTC, over the next three years went to basic training, airborne school advanced camp and Officer Training schools he worked two jobs and took 21 credit hours each semester, graduated in ’85 with a BS in the above, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and entered class 86-12 to become an Army Aviator. He graduated with his class and was assigned to Fort Hood Texas with the 1st of the 228 attack battalion. Greg finished with the active Army in 1989 and met Gwen in ’86 on a blind date. When he got out he worked for a helicopter charter company flying offshore from ’89 to ’94 and also was in the Army National Guard. They had their sons Gregory in ’89 and Quaid in ’91. They built their house in ’89, he started his own helicopter business in ’94 with one helicopter and sold the business in 2007 with 26 helicopters and 175 employees! Moved up to Colorado full time in ’08 and you know the rest!
